In wooded compound on east side of footpath 500 yards north from the end of Upper Kingston Lane.
OPEN Although the hatch is open the shaft is plugged with concrete one rung down the ladder. Externally the post is in poor condition, the top of the ventilation shaft and all the louvres are missing.
Opened in 1962 and closed in 1968.
When World War II ended, my father was demobbed and joined the Royal Observer Corps. One Saturday morning in 1965 when I was 13, he took me along the coast road from Shoreham by Sea (where we lived) to Southwick and up the main road to the South Downs. In a very well obscured corner of a field, we pushed our way through a hedgerow to see the brick raised shaft entrance and the ventilator as shown on the images. He led the way down the rungs of the shaft to the rooms below. Each was packed with electronic gear, with very basic furnishings - very utilitarian. Sadly, he had already warned me not to take my camera which today is a great shame. There were I guess 4 or 5 people in ROC uniform who didn’t seem to mind me being there. I was there a few hours, and nothing seemed to happen - I realise now, of course, just as well! I wonder if, with Mr. Putin getting uppity, someone will start digging out the concrete from the shaft!
