There is an ice-house in the grounds of Reigate 6th Form College (formerly Reigate Lodge) It is located on the edge of a wooded area on the north side of Castlefield Street, 200 metres south west of the main house and lies under a low mound with the entrance bricked up.
There are several ponds in the vicinity that could have supplied the ice in winter, the nearest being 60 - 90 metres away. The ice-house predates 1865 as it is shown on the 1st edition 25" OS map.
Members of Subterranea Britannica and the Wealden Cave and Mine Society were given permission to break into the ice-house in May 1996. Internally the brick work was found to be generally in good condition although the ice chamber was filled with soil to just below the level of the entrance passage. After measuring the ice-house and taking a series of photographs the entrance was sealed up again.
