The area adjacent to the Netherlands/Belgium border has a multitude of large limestone quarries. Many of them date back to the mediaeval period and cut across the modern border, which only dates from the creation of of Belgium in 1830. Graffiti from miners helps date some of the quarries.
This limestone quarry, around a kilometre north east of Bemelen, was the site of a memorable visit by Sub Brit in 2003. We joined SOK (Studiegroep Onderaardse Kalksteengroeven or Study Group for Underground Limestone Quarries) in celebrating their 25th anniversary and had a splendid picnic before visiting the quarry,It has a pillar and stall layout and was securely gated but with grilles to provide access to bats. In more recent times the quarry has been inaccessible to researchers due to local authority legislation.
