Machrihanish was a WWII RN airfield. Later it became a NATO airfield and the runway extended. There were said to be NDBs stored as well as other munitions. The American had a SEAL unit based there. They replaced the Station Headquarters with a new building which was later used by the RAF.
A building was built for the use of the SEALs with a large loading and storage area with cages for hanging equipment to dry. Various rooms that could be used as offices or to control operations. A couple could have been SCIFs. There is an armoury and small arms firing range, these are now used by a local company.
There were male and female showers, I think cold one to wash off the salt water then normal heated ones.
In the middle of the airfield is a concrete structure where fuel bowsers would be protected during an attack on the airfield.
There is what is probably a BOXER tower, did not spot any UNITER buildings.
There was a coal mine at one side of the airfield but little remains now.
